Flexible live/work lofts are available in downtown Salem for an October 1 move in, just in time for the festive Halloween season. This building was renovated last year, and has been the site of both a haunted house and a garage in previous lives. With all this history, some of it still being apparent (one of the units still has an original car hoist attached to the ceiling) it would be hard to find a more unique loft.
With exposed brick walls, original hanging florescent lamps, and very high 14 foot ceilings this is not just loft space but a return to a traditional definition of a loft. The floors in the lofts are concrete with the exception of one unit which has concrete throughout the loft and hardwood in the kitchen and all lofts feature thoughtful skylights for natural light. It's a little rough around the edges, and isn't as polished as some of the other elegant spaces that are made to appeal to the majority of apartment and condo dwellers. This space is beautiful but really for the person who wants to live in a previously industrial space and or is an artist seeking a place to both live and work.
The advantages of this building as live/work space for an artist are huge. Working artists in the area wishing to take advantage of the proximity of the lofts to galleries, Artists Row, the Peabody Essex Museum, and not to mention a constant stream of tourists, and ability to reduce over head by combining rental and work space, can live and work in the perfect location. Especially because the space is flexible. Having one enormous room to sleep, live, create, and dine in certainly isn't for everyone but many artists will tell you its just that flexibility that makes it so desirable to them.
The lofts are very sound proof as well with all that concrete and exposed brick the space is a private oasis, drowning out the city. We can't forget to mention that the ceiling is beautiful heavy timber exposed wood beams (which we love). The best part about this loft may be the price! Nicely priced at $1400 (with parking available right outside!) for an open studio space alone would be great but at 1125 square feet this loft feels huge when combined with 14 foot ceilings.
Some lucky loft lover is really going to luck out!
